Lunesta is the trade name for a medication containing the active ingredient eszopiclone, used for the treatment of insomnia.
Indications for Use:
- Insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep or maintaining sleep.
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to eszopiclone or any components of the drug.
- Severe hepatic dysfunction.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use is not recommended due to insufficient safety data.
Side Effects:
- Common:
- Bitter or metallic taste in the mouth.
- Headache, drowsiness, dry mouth.
- Rare but Serious:
- Allergic reactions, including angioedema.
- Behavioral changes, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts.
- Other:
- Dizziness, nausea, vomiting.
- Impaired coordination, amnesia.
Special Instructions:
- Risk of Dependence and Abuse:
- Eszopiclone is classified as a controlled substance (C-IV) due to its potential for dependence and abuse.
- Complex Sleep Behaviors:
- There is a risk of patients engaging in activities such as driving, eating, or making phone calls during sleep, with no recollection afterward.
- Interaction with Alcohol and CNS Depressants:
- Co-administration with alcohol or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants can increase sedation and is not recommended.
- Discontinuation:
- Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use may lead to withdrawal symptoms. Gradual dose reduction under medical supervision is recommended.
