Levothyroxine Sodium
Levothyroxine sodium is a synthetic analog of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T₄) used for the treatment of various thyroid-related conditions.
Indications for Use:
- Hypothyroidism:
- Replacement therapy for insufficient thyroid hormone production.
- Euthyroid Goiter:
- Treatment of benign goiter with normal thyroid function.
- Prevention of Goiter Recurrence:
- After surgical treatment of euthyroid goiter.
- Thyroid Cancer:
- Suppressive therapy following surgical intervention.
- Thyroid Suppressive Therapy:
- As part of combination therapy for thyrotoxicosis after achieving a euthyroid state.
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or any excipients.
- Untreated thyrotoxicosis.
- Untreated adrenal insufficiency or pituitary gland insufficiency.
- Acute myocardial infarction, myocarditis, or pancarditis.
Side Effects:
- When used correctly: Side effects are typically not observed.
- In cases of overdose or rapid dose escalation: Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include:
- Tachycardia, arrhythmias.
- Increased sweating, insomnia, tremors, anxiety.
- Weight loss.
- Allergic Reactions: Rarely, skin rash or pruritus (itching).
Special Instructions:
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Therapy with levothyroxine should be continued during pregnancy and breastfeeding; dose adjustments may be required to meet increased metabolic demands.
- Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases: Careful dose selection and gradual adjustments are necessary to minimize the risk of cardiac complications.
- Drug Interactions: Some medications (e.g., calcium supplements, antacids, and certain antiepileptics) may interfere with the absorption or efficacy of levothyroxine. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
- Before starting treatment with Levothyroxine Sodium, consult a healthcare professional to determine the optimal dosage and treatment plan. Self-medication is strongly discouraged and may result in adverse outcomes.
