Active ingredient

Levothyroxine sodium is a synthetic levothyroxine isomer of thyroxine.

Dosage
  • Adults: the initial dose is usually 25-50 mcg per day, with a gradual increase every 2-4 weeks until the optimal dose is reached.
  • Children: dosage depends on age and body weight, it is recommended to start with 12.5-50 mcg per day with subsequent adjustment.
  • Directions for use: take orally in the morning on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes before breakfast, drinking a small amount of water.

Levothyroxine Sodium

Levothyroxine sodium is a synthetic analog of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T₄), used for the treatment of various thyroid-related conditions.

Indications for Use:

  1. Hypothyroidism:
    • Replacement therapy for insufficient thyroid hormone production.
  2. Euthyroid Goiter:
    • Treatment of benign goiter with normal thyroid function.
  3. Prevention of Goiter Recurrence:
    • After surgical treatment of euthyroid goiter.
  4. Thyroid Cancer:
    • Suppressive therapy following surgical intervention.
  5. Thyroid Suppressive Therapy:
    • As part of the complex treatment of thyrotoxicosis after achieving a euthyroid state.

Contraindications:

  • Known hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or any excipients in the formulation.
  • Untreated thyrotoxicosis.
  • Untreated adrenal insufficiency or pituitary gland insufficiency.
  • Acute myocardial infarction, myocarditis, or pancarditis.

Side Effects:

  1. When used properly: Side effects are generally absent.
  2. In cases of overdose or rapid dose escalation: Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may occur, including:
    • Tachycardia, arrhythmias.
    • Increased sweating, insomnia, tremors, anxiety.
    • Weight loss, diarrhea.
  3. Allergic Reactions: Rarely, skin rash or pruritus (itching).

Special Instructions:

  • Before initiating treatment, exclude the presence of conditions such as ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, or adrenal insufficiency.
  • In patients with cardiovascular diseases, the initial dose should be lower, and dose adjustments should be made under close medical supervision.
  • During pregnancy and lactation, therapy with levothyroxine should be continued, but combination with antithyroid drugs is contraindicated.
  • Consult a healthcare provider before starting levothyroxine sodium to determine the optimal dosage and exclude potential contraindications. Self-medication is strongly discouraged and may lead to adverse effects.
