
Glimepiride
Glimepiride is an oral hypoglycemic agent classified as a third-generation sulfonylurea derivative, used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Indications for Use:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes) when diet therapy and exercise alone are insufficient to achieve glycemic control.
Contraindications:
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic precoma, or coma.
- Severe hepatic or renal insufficiency.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Hypersensitivity to glimepiride, other sulfonylurea derivatives, or sulfonamides.
Side Effects:
- Metabolic: Hypoglycemia.
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
- Allergic Reactions: Pruritus (itching), skin rash.
